Water conservation in households and businesses ...
The need to save water has never been greater. In 2006, we experienced the worst year of drought and lowest stream flows in our State’s history.
A litre of water saved is equivalent to a litre of water added to the system by additional supply – but a litre saved is cheaper, quicker to find and involves lower greenhouse gas emissions.
Victorians are meeting the challenge. There has been an overwhelming response to help save water.
Businesses and households have jointly reduced their water use by 22 per cent in Melbourne and by similar amounts in regional centres.
Through the Pathways to Sustainability program, Melbourne’s water corporations are working with around 1500 major industrial water users – developing water saving plans to reduce industrial use by five billion litres annually by 2008.
Householders are also contributing to our record savings. Since the launch of the Water Smart Gardens and Homes Rebate Scheme in January 2003, over 160,000 rebates have been claimed.
These products have helped Victorians save more than 1.4 billion litres of water each year and to save money on their water bills.
With the ongoing challenges of drought and climate change, saving water must be a lifelong habit for every Victorian.
